SMART Project: Fellows go to Kenya to Study Power of “Edutainment”

In January 2012, four graduate students and I traveled to Kenya for three weeks to complete a research project on behalf of the SMART program. SMART, which stands for Student Multidisciplinary Applied Research Teams, is an initiative of the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD). The SMART program connects students with promising small enterprises in the developing world. In this case, my team (four CIPA Fellows and one PhD candidate from City and Regional Planning) were assigned to work as research consultants for Mediae, a British media company based in Kenya. Mediae produces Makutano Junction, one of the highest-rated television shows in East Africa. Read more
